Compatibility information on drug combinations can improve patient care and decrease costs by eliminating the need for additional venous access. The compatibility of two different parenteral nutrient (PN) solutions with doxapram (Mopram?), liposomal alprostadil (Eglandin?), and nicardipine (Perdipinez) was studied. The commercial, central (PN-TWIN3?) and peripheral (Combiflex Peri?) PN formula and each drug solution of maximum and/ or common concentration were prepared. Each of the drug solutions was combined in the test tubes with each of the PN solutions in a 1:1 ratio. The samples were visually inspected for color change, precipitation, and gas formation with unaided eye, tested for pH and filtered on a 0.45-micrometer filter paper at immediately, 15min, 1hr, 4hr, 12hr and 24 hr after mixing. The filter papers were observed under a microscope at 40 X magnification to detect for any precipitate. The samples were stored at room temperature under normal fluorescent lighting. Doxapram, liposomal alprostadil and nicardipine were visually compatible with central and peripheral PN formula. The additional study is needed to determine whether combinations are chemically stable.
