Comparison of fish oil-containing fat emulsion and MCT/LCT fat emulsion in critically ill pediatric patients
Dep. of Pharmacy, It has been reported that administration of ω-3 fatty acids is beneficial in patients with inflammatory process. However, less is known about this effect in critically ill pediatric patients. A lipid emulsion based on soybean oil, medium chain triglyceride, olive oil, and fish oil(SMOF) was compared with MCT/LCT for safety and efficacy. We retrospectively reviewed the EMR. All patients receiving at least 5 day course of PN with SMOF or MCT/LCT in PICU at the AMC were included. Safety parameters were hematology, clinical chemistry, and documentation of adverse events. Clinical efficacy was monitored by the length of ICU stay and mortality. The demographic characteristics in 2 groups did not differ in age and daily lipid dose except gender, total calories and PRISM score. There were no differences in ICU stay and mortality between 2 groups. We did not find the evidence for the benefit of fish-oil containing fat emulsion. Large, prospective studies are needed to demonstrate the effect of ω-3 fatty acid in critically ill pediatric patients. |
